Background
Aaron Russo and several of his associates opened the Electric Theater at the site of the Rainbo Gardens ice rink on Wednesday April 3, 1968. As with the Fillmores, the Tea Party, the Electric Factory, the Grande Ballroom, to name a few, it became one of the required stops for all of the biggest bands in the exploding rock & roll scene. For legal reasons Russo changed the name at the end of July 1968 briefly to the ‘Lectric Theater, and then in early August to its namesake the Kinetic Playground. A fire following the November 7, 1969 show of Iron Butterfly, Poco & King Crimson closed the Kinetic for over 3 years. It would remain closed until Howard Stein reopened the Kinetic Playground on December 22, 1972 with a show featuring It’s A Beautiful Day, Bloodrock & Eggs Over Easy. Ironically, Poco who was on the last bill the night of the fire was to reopen the Kinetic but cancelled and was replaced by Bloodrock. Here is the Kinetic Playground concert archive derived from mainly from newspaper ads & listings and posters.
